NDDC Shortlisted Candidates for Foreign Scholarship 2012 Programme

The Niger Delta Development commission (NDDC) has shortlisted candidates for final interview in the NDDC Foreign Scholarship Programme 2012. 

A total of 3,100 candidates out of about 6,000 that applied for the NDDC Foreign Scholarship Scheme wrote the electronic examination. From 3100 candidates, 1089 made it to the final list.

The Legal Practitioners Privilege Committee (LPPC) on Thursday announced the names of successful candidates for the rank of SAN.

Professor Yemi Akinseye-George a professor of Law  and 24 other lawyers are set to be elevated to the rank of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN).
The elevation was endorsed at a meeting held on Thursday at the Supreme Court complex in Abuja, in accordance with the provisions of the Legal Practitioners' Act 2004.
Lawyers endorsed are Human Rights activist and former president of African Bar association Femi Falana, Rotimi Jacobs  EFCC Counsel , and others Professor Yemi Akinseye George, LL.B (Hons), LL.M (Lagos), B.L is a 1985 graduate of law from the Faculty of Law, University of Lagos, Akoka, Yaba. He has written extensively on various aspects of law and has engaged in the practice of law since 1986 when he was called to the Bar as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria. A firm believer in multi-disciplinary approach to legal issues, He  has acquired wide and diversified experience in legal practice and consultancy. His one year abroad as a Fellow of the prestigious Davis Centre at Princeton University, New Jersey USA has helped to sharpen his professional skills considerably. So also has his four-year exposure to public sector legal services as Special Assistant to the Hon. Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, (2003-2007). He is the President of the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies which he co-founded in 1986

Over 125 people were said to have  applied, 25 persons were deemed successful out of 71 people short-listed.

NUC - SUSPENSION OF OPERATIONAL LICENCES OF SOME PRIVATE UNIVERSITIES

Pursuant to its statutory mandate of ensuring the quality and orderly development of university education in Nigeria, the National Universities Commission has observed persistent violation of extant rules and operational guidelines by some private universities as follows:

i. Unwillingness to comply with NUC Regulations:

The universities have persistently violated laid down procedures regarding implementation of the provisions of the Academic Brief and Master Plan documents as well as express provisions of the letter conveying approval for their licence through commencement of parttime and other academic programmes without requisite approval;

ii. Inappropriate Governance Structure and Ethos:

Some of the affected universities have over the years failed to properly constitute their Governing Councils and in some instances did not appoint Pro-Chancellors as required by their University laws and in line with university tradition and global best practices. This has brought about the overbearing presence and interference of the promoter in the day-to-day running of the universities;

iii. Poor Management of Academic Activities:

Some of the affected universities have engaged in the establishment of academic programmes without the requisite approval by the NUC and consideration for adequate human and material resources, to ensure

quality of programmes;

iv. Generally Poor Learning Environment:

The Commission has observed that some of the universities have generally poor learning environment. In some of these institutions,ICT, Teaching and Learning Resources are poorly deployed; and

v. Mismanagement of Students’ Examination Records:

The Commission also observed that some of the universities employ unconventional approaches to the management of examination and records. These include generally poor examination administration and failure to prepare and release examination transcripts to students as and when due.

Consequently, the National Universities Commission on 4th July 2012  hereby suspends the

operational licence of:

􀂾 Madonna University, Okija and its other campuses; Lead City University, Ibadan; Tansian University, Umunya; Caritas University, Amorji-Nike, Enugu; Joseph Ayo Babalola University, Ikeji-Arakeji; Achievers University, Owo and Obong University, Obong Ntak’s licence has been withdrawn because it failed to meet the requirement for renewal of the provisional licence after the statutory three-year period.

The universities should, in accordance with the implication of the suspension of licence, immediately stop further admission of students into all their academic programmes until a forensic audit is conducted.

For candidates who applied to any of these universities for the 2012/2013 academic year, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has been requested to assist in distributing qualified candidates to other universities of their choice.

PTDF Scholarship Scheme 2012 / 2013 for MSc, PhD and Undergraduate Programs

The Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) is a parastatal of the Ministry of Petroleum Resources established by Decree 25 of 1973 dedicated for the purpose of development, promotion and implementation of petroleum technology and manpower development through research and training of Nigerians as graduates, professionals, technicians and craftsmen in the fields of engineering, geology, geosciences, management, economics and relevant fields in the petroleum and solid minerals industry in Nigeria or abroad.

Our mission is to train Nigerians to qualify as graduates, professionals, technicians and craftsmen in the field of engineering, geology, science and management in the oil and gas industry in Nigeria or abroad. We have a vision to serve not only as a vessel for the development of indigenous manpower and technology transfer/acquisition in the petroleum industry but also to make Nigeria a human resource centre for the West African sub-region. Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF)

To ensure a steadfast implementation of this mandate, PTDF is inviting applications from suitably qualified candidates for the MSc and PhD as well as Undergraduate Scholarships, under the 2012/2013 PTDF Scholarship Scheme. Scholarships will be awarded for studies in areas listed below, in the United Kingdom, France and upgraded Universities in Nigeria for the 2012/2013 session. However, the Undergraduate level will be awarded for studies in Nigeria only.

Application Forms can be accessed online using an ATM card or through purchase of a scratch card from designated major branches of First Bank of Nigeria Plc in all the States and FCT, upon payment of a NON-REFUNDABLE sum of N1,000 (One Thousand Naira Only). Instructions on how to access the form online is clearly stated on the backside of the cards.

PTDF however wishes to inform applicants that the Overseas Scholarship Scheme was instituted as a short term measure to address identified skills gaps, pending the outcome of the various capacity building efforts being made to enable our domestic universities effectively handle the onerous task of grooming qualitative professionals in the oil and gas related disciplines. With the numerous upgrade programmes executed by the Fund in some Federal Universities in Nigeria, emphasis has shifted to training Nigerians in-country. Consequently, only a limited number of candidates will be sponsored overseas and the rest in Nigerian Universities listed below.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS

A.) UNDER GRADUATE (Nigeria Only)

• Possession of 5 credits in WAEC/SSCE/NECO including English Language and Mathematics
• Must have concluded the 1st year of their study in any of the PTDF upgraded Federal Universities listed above.
• Must have scored a minimum CGPA of 3.0 on scale of 5 or 4.5 on a scale of 7 in their 1st Year.
• Must scan and attach a copy of their admission letter
• Students admitted into the University through Direct Entry i.e. 200 level must have either of the following:
• - Minimum of Upper Credit at the Diploma level
• - Minimum of 10 points in interim Joint Matriculation Board (I.J.M.B) examination.
• - Minimum of 8 points at the Advanced Level General Certificate of Education (G.C.E).

B.) MSc (Nigeria and Overseas)

• A minimum of Second Class Upper (2.1) in an Oil and Gas related field OR a 2.2 with oil and gas industry experience
• National Youth Service (NYSC) certificate
• Applicants must be computer literate
• Possession of O/level with Credit in English Language in WAEC/SSCE (C6) or NECO (C4);
• Applicants must not be above 30 years of age
• Applicants without credit in English language as in (4) above but possess any of the following may apply
• - Test of English language as a foreign language (TOEFL)
• - G.R.E ( Graduate Record Examination)
• - GMAT – for Management related courses
• - International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

C.) PhD Program

• Applicants must be in the academics teaching oil and gas related discipline;
• Applicants must possess minimum of 2.2 on first degree and a good second degree certificate;
• Applicants must submit a research proposal relevant to the oil and gas industry (of not more than 5 pages) to include: Topic, introduction, objective, methodology and mode of data collection;
• Applicants must include valid admission letter;
• Applicants must not be over 40 years of age; and;
• Applicants must include their masters degree project
