Senior Advocates set to defend Tinubu over foreign accounts

Senior Advocates set to defend Tinubu over foreign accounts

Chief Wole Olanipeken, Prof Yemi Osinbajo,Chief Rotimi Akeredolu ,and Chief Niyi Akintola all Senior Advocate of Nigeria S.A.N are all prepared to defend the Former governor of Lagos state, Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu when he appears before the code of Conduct Tribunal in Abuja FCT on Wednesday (today)

Chief Niyi Akintola stated in an interview on telephone with punch newspaper correspondent.

But He (Akintola) did not give further details of Tinubu’s defence at the tribunal. He said that he was on his way to Abuja via Owerri by flight at the time of the telephone interview.

There was heavy security at the code of conduct tribunal ahead of Chief tinubu's appearance, three police pick up hillux vehicles were stationed at strategic points, there were heavily armed police men stationed around the court premises numbering over 300 frisking and interrogating those who came to the court premises including lawyers and politicians.

Tinubu will at the tribunal on Wednesday (today) answer to charges of allegedly operating ten undisclosed foreign accounts while in Office between 1999 and 2007.

Tinubu’s alleged offence contravenes section7 of the code of Conduct Bureaui and Tribunal Act, cap 56 Laws of The Federal Republic of Nigeria LFN.

The Allegation is that Tinubu failed to declare the said 10 foreign bank accounts in the assets declaration Form CCB-1, which he filled and submitted to the CCB when he was elected governor in the year 1999.

There is a widely held belief, most especially in opposition quarters, that the case against the ex-governor has a political undertone.

Opinion

Being that as it may, the most pertinent question is whether the ex-governor committed an offence in the first place, if he did the motive behind the legal process against him becomes immaterial.
